What attracts visitors
- Historic centre: Allariz’s urban regeneration received the European Prize for Urban Planning in 1994 and is the main reason for visiting: stone streets, bridges over the Arnoia and convents.
- Allariz Area Biosphere Reserve: declared by UNESCO in 2005, it covers Allariz, Vilar de Santos, Rairiz de Veiga and A Bola. It attracts hikers and families looking for nature near the village.
- Festa do Boi: held around Corpus Christi, between late May and June, and declared of Galician tourist interest.
- Ourense a short hop away: the hot springs and the city of Ourense are close, and many visitors combine the two on one break.
A short-break destination, not a beach one
Unlike the Rías Baixas, in Allariz demand is spread throughout the year and concentrates on weekends and long weekends. That changes the management: stays of two or three nights, high turnover at weekends and midweek gaps to fill with adjusted prices or longer stays. In winter, heating and a good fireplace or stove are part of the product; in summer, the terrace and the river. Cabins, houses and apartments with charm are what is most sought. Many guests arrive by car from other Galician cities, from outside Galicia or from Portugal, so nearby parking and clear arrival instructions avoid many phone calls.
Regulations: VUT, rural tourism or seasonal let
If you rent a whole home for stays of under 30 days, the Xunta’s Decreto 12/2017 applies: a responsible declaration to Turismo de Galicia, registration in the REAT (the Galician tourist register), a 24-hour phone, complaint forms, third-party liability insurance and heating, unless you only open from June to September (something that usually does not suit Allariz). If the property is on rural land, the decree only admits legally existing buildings. Rural tourism houses and cabin complexes may fit other tourist categories with their own regulation; it pays to choose carefully before filing anything. We know of no specific municipal VUT (holiday home) regulation in Allariz nor a tourist tax surcharge. The national NRUA register was annulled by the Supreme Court in May 2026; in Galicia the register that counts is the REAT.

In practice, yes. Decreto 12/2017 only allows you to dispense with it if the property operates from June to September, and in Allariz a good part of demand is in autumn, winter and spring. Also, inland Ourense has cold winters: a house with good heating, and ideally a fireplace or stove, sells better and gets better reviews in low season.
