Agaete attracts travellers who want nature and a village atmosphere. The Puerto de las Nieves has fish restaurants, natural pools at Las Salinas and the sea link with Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Agaete Valley, with its coffee and fruit farms, is a walking area full of country houses. Above it, the Tamadaba Natural Park is one of the island’s great pine forests. In 2019 UNESCO inscribed the Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria Cultural Landscape, which spans Agaete, Artenara, Gáldar and Tejeda.
The Bajada de la Rama and the rest of the calendar
On 4 August thousands of people walk down from the Tamadaba pine forest to the Puerto de las Nieves carrying branches, in a festival of pre-Hispanic origin linked to praying for rain and declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in 1972. That week demand soars and bookings are made well in advance. The rest of the year, demand follows the weekends of island residents, the summer, and hikers in winter and spring.

Regulations: here the land matters more than anywhere else
Agaete is governed by the Canary Islands’ Ley 6/2025 (Law 6/2025), which requires municipal planning to expressly allow tourist use. A significant part of the municipality is protected natural area or rural land: the law prohibits allowing tourist use on rural land under natural, landscape, forest or hydrological protection and in agricultural settlements, and in protected natural areas it leaves the matter to their own planning. In addition, the property must be at least ten years old and the declaración responsable (responsible declaration) is filed with the Cabildo de Gran Canaria. We have not found a specific municipal ordinance. The national rental register was annulled by the Supreme Court in May 2026.
Practicalities in Agaete
The northern road and the access routes to the Valley shape the logistics: guests need clear arrival and parking instructions, and cleaning between stays has to be planned with a margin, especially during Rama week, when traffic gets difficult. It is also worth warning that the north can wake up cloudy even when the south is clear.
